Title: The Potential of Wave Energy in Sur: Resource Assessment and Techno-Economic Feasibility

Summary

As part of this collaborative effort, Sultane Qaboos University, in partnership with Oman LNG L.L.C through the EJAAD platform, explored the potential of wave energy as a renewable energy source in Oman. With the country working toward clean energy diversification and reduced dependence on fossil fuels, this project aimed to offer clean energy solutions, especially for the coastal area.

The main objective of this project is to assess technical and economic feasibility of harnessing wave energy in Sur, Oman. The project adopted special methodologies such as:

  • Collected direct wave measurements at the study site using (ADCP) systems.
  • Used SWAN wave modelling to simulate the wave behavior.
  • Evaluated multiple wave energy converters (WEC) technologies.
  • Compared wave technologies based on technical performance and economic feasibility.
  • Assessed electricity grid connection and possible energy losses.
  • Developed an interactive dashboard to display results.

The study provided valuable findings and practical guidance for future wave energy development in Oman. The results showed that North Oman has stable low-to-moderate wave resources, which can provide a reliable and continuous source of wave energy. Among the evaluated technologies, WaveDragon showed strong energy production potential, while Oscillating Water Column (OWC) systems demonstrated promising economic performance under local wave conditions.

The project contributes to Oman’s national and sustainability goals, such as:

  • Aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and objectives of renewable energy transformation in the country.
  • Helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependency on fossil fuels.
  • Ensures greater national energy security via clean energy diversification.
  • Facilitates sustainable use of marine coastal resources.
  • Enables studies and innovation in renewable energy from the ocean.
  • Provides clean power to coastal communities, ports, desalination plants, and industries.
